He was born in Debre Markos, a Gojam Province noted for so many outstanding poets, where he had the traditional Ethiopian church education. He received modern education in Addis Ababa and taught at Swedish missionary school. During Italy’s invasion he went to the war front and was caught and sent to Italy where he was imprisoned for seven years. After liberation he was released and returned home. He has also served as Foreign Minister, first secretary at the United Nations Office, Education Minster, Ethiopian Ambassador at the UN, England and Holland among others. Novelist Haddis Alemayehu also wrote a lot of play and books among the list are; “Yeabesha ena Yewedehuala gabcha”( የአበሻናየወደኋላጋብቻ), Teret teret Yemeseret(ተረትተረትየመሰረት), Wenjelegnawu dagna(ወንጀለኛውዳኛ),Yelim Izat(የልምእዣት), Tizita(ትዝታ) and his knotted novel Fikir Eskemekabir(ፍቅርእስከመቃብር) which is one of the best of Amharic Literature ever. He was the recipient of the 1968 Haile Selassie I prize winner and was awarded an honorary doctorate by Addis Ababa University.
